how fashion reflects personality

It's bright, it's embroidered and it is one of my favourite outfits ever. But how does it reflect my personality? Fashion is constantly used to reflect our personality, mood or how we are as a person. Take slogan tees for example, 'still drunk from last night' is an indication to what that person is like but it doesn't have to be that obvious. You really don't have to wear your feelings on your sleeve.

It's like buying the same piece of clothing over again, I fall victim of buying a striped tee one too many times (maybe more than once) so I can relate. Eventually your aesthetic matches your personality. No I'm not blue, white and not open to change but I am simple and straightforward in my thinking. It's like fashion psychology. Most commonly talked about for job interviews, what you wear reflects how you might act, the time you take for yourself and how you would fit into that job due to the outfit you wore for the interview. Your clothes are your first impression so why not make it a good one right? But you don't always have to wear what everyone else does.

Be a little adventurous.

Do you buy a trend the minute it comes out? There is a psychological reason to why you do that, most simply put as that you like to be inclusive and quite possible don't want to stand out. Non-uniform days used to be the death of me as I hated standing out and would therefore buy clothes that were similar to everyone else. There is no point in following the crowd if you don't like something. Build your own aesthetic based on your personality. You like yellow? Go for a yellow top and if you're confident in it then you'll rock it, even if no one else you've ever known has worn something like it before. Do you in the way you want to.

Whilst fashion is an expression of ones taste and personality. So is makeup. These two spheres that are so heavily featured in women's lives and make us the individuals we want to be rather than the individuals we are born. It separates us out from everyone else.

But what does my favourite outfit say about me?
It's bright - I would see myself as a bright and bubbly person.
It is colour co-ordinated - okay usually I'm not this fussy when it comes to clothes but I get so annoyed when the colours don't match, maybe I am an organisational freak.
It's a little bit different - yes there is a trend led piece in there but usually I don't follow the trends, I'm a rule breaker (anyone who knows me and is reading this will say otherwise but we can imagine that I am for the purpose of this blog post).

This post has ended up being a fashion pyschology lesson so I hope you all enjoyed reading something a little different. Want to know more about how fashion reflects personality? This post is a collab with the wonderful Edie Whitehead from thelifeofedie.com so go and have a nosy of how fashion reflects her personality.

  1. This is a really interesting read! I've always agreed that fashion does reflect personality and character. How we choose to represent ourselves to the world demonstrates how we are. Bright bold patterns don't always mean we are bright and bold, but it could mean that we have the courage and confidence to experiment and not simply fall back on the easy things that require little effort. Thanks for sharing this awesome post!

  7. Came from Edies blog <3, I just feel like I don’t want people to analyse me straight away and be like oh she’s wearing bright clothes so she must be outgoing, idk I prefer to wear darker outfits to not stand out ?? (idk)

  8. I loved reading this post! I do think fashion is an important way to express yourself. Honestly I wouldn´t be surprised if there is a thing like fashion psychology. This would be such an interesting fiel of research as the way we look influences ourselves and how we feel but also the people surrounding us but also the way we look is influenced by these things.

  10. I feel like the clothes I wear depend on my mood that day, and in 2017 I want to spend a little more money on quality items that I know I will love and wear again and again- not to buy clothes just because they're a trend at the moment, because they don't last. x
