#anewageinspiration Ramona Mag

I'm so excited for this post *squeals like a child* because this is my second #anewageinspiration post and I'm interviewing one of my favourite people, Freya Bennett. Freya is Co-founder and Co-directer of Ramona Magazine for girls. An internet space filled to the brim full of amazing articles written by some pretty amazing people, Ramona Mag is a space on the internet to inspire and boost girls self esteem. I really wanted to know more about the magazine and if you don't read it already the link is here: http://ramonamag.com/
When and why was Ramona mag first established? Why did you want to create a space for girls to write on the internet?
Ramona was created in 2014 by myself and Sophie Pellegrini. I had originally contacted a group of women who I thought might be interested in getting this idea off the ground. Sophie was keen to design the website and we really began working side by side from that point. I have always wanted to create a magazine for teenage girls -- pretty much since I was a teenage girl myself! I feel like there is a huge gap in the market for media content for girls that makes them feel empowered and worthy. I also loved the idea that girls and women could submit there own work. We aren't just full of professional writers, we wanted every girl to feel like her voice was good enough to be heard!

How do you gain inspiration for the types of articles on the magazine, are there any favourite articles on the magazine?

We are lucky enough to have articles submitted to us on a regular basis! We LOVE hearing from girls and women from all over the world who want to share their story. For articles I write myself, I gain inspiration from my life. I think sharing stories is so important in taking down taboos and helping others not feel alone. This year I wrote about my miscarriage, it was really hard, but the response was amazing.
I don't really have any favourite articles but there is a very funny article on masterbation that is going to be in our print mag (due out Dec) that makes me giggle a lot!

Technology is such a large part of this generation (and it's how I found Ramona mag) how has it impacted the way you produce and promote your website?
We couldn't run Ramona without technology. As an online magazine, we obviously rely on technology but more than that, we rely on social media to promote our magazine. Instagram and Facebook really have helped Ramona grow! We honestly wouldn't have been as far along as we are now without it.

What challenges do you face when developing new ideas for Ramona?
The challenges we face are varied. At the moment it's time. We are basically a two person team (with wonderful people helping out in certain areas). In the lead up to printing, Ramona becomes a full time job pretty much! The other tricky thing is money. Like anything creative, we don't really earn any money ourselves. We are rich in ideas and creativity but not in money.

Ramona Magazine for Girls is bursting with talented writers, what is your greatest achievement as Co-founder and Co-directer of the magazine?
I think our absolute greatest achievement is helping girls feel worthy. We get emails from girls all over the world telling us how Ramona has made them feel better about themselves. That in itself is reward enough.
What's one piece of advice that you can give to aspiring journalists?
Don't give up. If you get rejected over and over, it isn't because you aren't good enough. You are amazing, just keep practicing, keep writing and keep submitting to anything and everything that is suited to your genre. Practice is the key to being amazing at anything. :)

7. What would you like the future of Ramona magazine to be - any exciting ideas?
OOH! So many ideas! Obviously we would like to keep growing and expanding our reach. We want to be able to maintain a yearly print magazine and ideally we would love to have a few zines on specific topics. My personal dream is to create a mentorship program. I would love to work directly with teenage girls and have group meet ups every week as I help them with writing, confidence and growing their ideas!

I hope you've liked this interview with Freya, it's been a pleasure to interview her and in my view what she has created on the internet for teenage girls like myself definitely makes her #anewageinspiration. Have you read Ramona Mag before? If not check out there links:
