do I have too many clothes?

Do I have too many clothes? The simple answer to this would be yes. This is probably true, I do own too many clothes but with fast fashion and the changing aesthetics of my teenage wardrobe I will probably still buy more. There is nothing wrong with this but it is not like my wardrobe is going to get bigger anytime soon so I can't keep buying new clothes and keeping the old ones! I have a 'one in one out' policy so that for every new piece of clothing I buy, I give one away. When I do a big clear out I take a mental note of how many items I'm giving away (or I might write it down as I'll probably forget) and I can buy as many items that I've given away! This is a great tip if you're a fashion hoarder like myself as it keeps you in check of what you have in your wardrobe.

But really... do I need everything? I have about 4 variations of a white t-shirt and no doubt I'll buy more this summer but I really only need one. I've started pairing different pieces together and I actually really like the outcomes - it's taught me that I really don't need all clothes I have and to appreciate the ones I wear. Not only that but it's stopped me from binge buying as well (something I seemed to do a lot last year) and now I save up for pieces that will either make a statement in my wardrobe, clothes that I feel comfortable in and good quality basics. So almost like three categories; through this it's also helped me give clothes away as well!

I've yet to try a capsule wardrobe, however after watching Viviannadoesmakeup's capsule wardrobe videos and after reading Caroline's (www.Un-fancy.com) blog about it I think it is an amazing way to control what goes in and out of your wardrobe and also helps you to budget your clothes in a way. I don't think I will try really soon but I would love to know if you have!

I loved writing this post as it's almost like an organised ramble of whether I own too many clothes or not. So the answer is yes, yes I do although I really hope this post might help you to stop making rash decisions when you buy and it's certainly helped me in the long run. I'm much happier with my wardrobe by using the methods I talked about!

My question to you is: what do you think of the whole capsule wardrobe idea?

  1. I really like the idea of one in one out, I have way to many clothes, it doesn't even all fit in the wardrobe, I end up with piles around the room.

  2. I haven't tried the capsule wardrobe thing yet and I don't think I will to be honest. I love creating outfits and wearing something more than just basics daily. But I admit I do have to get rid of some unnecessary pieces laying around... and control my hauling habits haha

  3. Do I have too many clothes? In short, yes!

One thing I desperately want to do this year is to streamline a little bit and I intend to try and sell on my castaways on Depop too as most are in perfect condition too as well as picking up thrifty bits on there too!

    Great Post!

    1. I think I might start doing that as well, although knowing me I'll end up buying a whole new wardrobe while I'm at it! x

  4. Stript t-shirts are my weakness in my wardrobe, I own so many! I really want to try a capsule wardrobe after seeing Anna have so much success with it.

  5. I really like the idea of a capsule wardrobe, but I think for now as I am still in the transition out of my teen style and into my own style (if that makes sense) I will stick to my wardrobe. I might consider it next time I do a clear out though!

  7. I personally really like the idea of a capsule wardrobe, I've seen Vivianna's videos and the really inspired me. I have't tried it yet though haha. I always make sure I have the basics and some peaces that stand out in my wardrobe. Those are the only items I need to create a lovely outfit (at least I hope haha). I'm also working on series on my blog about this subject since I love reading posts like these! I've been reading your posts a lot lately, your blog is becoming one of my favourites! X

  8. I *know* I have way too many clothes (as in like 20 pairs of jeans too many), but I find it irrationally hard to part with them. I'm living abroad at the moment and could only bring one suitcase worth of clothes with me and it's actually been alright, I haven't missed the clothes I left behind - going to have to have a massive clear out when I move back home!

  11. Love the idea of a capsule wardrobe, it's definitely something I want to work towards as I know I'm way too attached to things to give them away unless there's a good reason! Probably won't happen anytime soon though!

    1. I get so attached to clothes but I'm trying to change that! I do think a capsule wardrobe would be quite hard

  12. I love the idea of capsule wardrobes, I just worry that I'd get bored! And I don't have the imagination to pair things in that many different ways haha. I am trying to cut down a little though, so I've been ruthless with this wardrobe cleanout. If I don't love it, and it doesn't make me feel good, it has to go!

  13. I really like the idea of a capsule wardrobe and I have watched countless youtube videos about the subject but I just don't think it is something I could personally get on board with. I love collecting clothes :)

  14. I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe, but I often forget about that when I go shopping. I've actually started operating on a "uniform" type idea - where I'm trying to build 80% of my wardrobe around combinations that I know that I love. I wouldn't say clothes are really my issue as I'm a serial purger but shoes, on the other hand, well that's a whole different story!

  15. watched the capsule wardrobe video and I think it's way too hard for me. I actually think I have too less. I want more, and if I want more. I'm going to have to clear out those clothes that I don't wear anymore. so thank you Eleanor for reminding me!
